We have one of those 2" elasto memory foam things. I like it, my gf doesn't (and she bought it). The main draw back is that your fitted sheet will need to be tugged to the max to hook the corners. After a few nights one or more of the corners will pop off requiring you to remake the bed.

Viscoelastic foam, also known as memory or temper foam, was first commercialized during the mid 60’s as a result of NASA’s AMES Research technology transfer program. This open-cell variety of flexible polyurethane foam (FPF) was distinguished by properties allowing it to redistribute the G-Force suffered by astronauts during take-off and re-entry, and providing commercial pilots a more comfortable seating surface during long flights.

Polyurethane foam is a material that was engineered during World War II by Professor Dr. Otto Bayer to replace more expensive natural resources like rubber. Rapidly expanding beyond the war uses it was initially designed for, polyurethane foam today is one of the more wildly used materials around. The diversity of uses is also impressive – polyurethane foam can be found in everything from medical research labs to the cushions in your couch or chair. Polyurethane foam is also finding a use in economy mattresses because of its long-lasting comfort and affordability, as well as a way to reduce the costs of memory foam or latex foam mattresses by being used as a base. Polyurethane cushion foam is known as Qualux Foam for premium uses and Resilitex Foam for more economy uses.

Visco Elastic Memory Foam is a material NASA engineered to make astronauts more comfortable during space launch. It is sensitive to the heat the human body emits and has the ability to automatically adjust to body weight and temperature. The result is a luxurious sleeping experience, not only because Visco Elastic Memory Foam removes irksome pressure points that interfere with a restful sleep, but also because Visco Elastic Memory Foam aims to relieve aches and pains that can accumulate throughout the working day. Visco Elastic Memory Foam is considered medium in firmness and responds to your body´s pressure and temperature. It conforms to the curves of the body, offering support along the spine with no discernable pressure on bones and joints. Because of this lack of pressure, circulation is encouraged during sleep making it easier and even preferable to sleep in the same position for hours at a time. Visco Elastic Memory Foam also reduces the effects of tossing or turning from a sleeping partner!

Pretty much one in the same. Memory foam is made from polyurethane with additional chemicals that add to its viscosity level, thereby increasing its density. It is often referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. Depending on the chemicals used and its overall density, it is firmer in cool temperatures and softer when warm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_foam

You can't. The best thing you can do for it is to hang it outside in the sunshine for a day, then flip it over in the sunshine for another day. If you spray it with anything, it will get ruined.

I have a inner coil mattress topped with 4" of visco elastic foam and that little bit does make a noticiable difference.

The only drawback I've seen is that Its stiffness is directly related to the temperature in the house. If I keep the thermostat above 72, it gets squishy and my back ends up hurting more. At lower temperatures its very nice for my back and an improvement over my other plain inner coil spring mattress.

Temperpedic has a VERY nice upper end model for around $2400 that's ultra-firm. Its like sinking into heaven.
